Your Website Needs a Foundation

If you have a website, there is a good chance you have asked the same question as everyone else: How do I get my website onto Page One on Google? Your website needs a foundation how Search Systems Interpret your Website

And now we can probably add Bing, ChatGPT and other AI search systems to that question. There is plenty of advice about how to do it. You need the right keywords, good content and backlinks. Your website needs to be fast, mobile-friendly and technically sound, complete with strong titles, headings, internal links and descriptions. All of these things are important, but there is something that needs to come before them: your website needs a foundation.

Think About Building a House

You wouldn’t normally start building a house by choosing the kitchen, painting the walls and buying the furniture. First, you need a plan that establishes how the house will be built, how everything connects and which parts of the structure support everything else. A website isn’t really that different. You may have 20, 100 or 1,000 pages, but they shouldn’t simply exist as a loose collection of pages. They need to fit together see how Search Systems see your organisation. Some pages are more important than others. You probably have particular pages that describe your main services, products or areas of expertise that you would really like to see appearing at the top of search results. Let’s simply call these your important pages.

Then you have other pages that explain those subjects in more detail, supporting your important pages and helping establish what different sections of your website are actually about. Connecting everything together are your links. Put all these pages and links together and you have a network. Once you start looking at a website this way, something interesting happens: your website stops looking like a collection of individual pages and starts looking like a system.

How Do Search Systems Make Sense of That System?

Search systems such as Google, Bing and AI systems need to make sense of how all the pages on your website fit together. Ideas such as PageRank, the Random Surfer model, graph theory and Markov chains give us a way of understanding how those relationships can be modelled. Once you understand the basic ideas behind them, you start to see your website very differently. Let’s start with PageRank, because this is probably the easiest way to understand why the structure of your website matters.

PageRank — A Surprisingly Simple Idea

PageRank goes right back to the early development of Google. The basic idea was that a web page shouldn’t necessarily be judged only by what was written on it. Its relationship with other pages also mattered, and links created those relationships.

A page receiving links from other important pages could itself be considered important. But not every link was necessarily equal because the importance of the page providing the link also mattered. This created a network in which authority could move through links from one page to another. That basic idea is extremely useful when thinking about the structure of your own website. Your internal links aren’t simply there to help somebody navigate from one page to another. They create relationships between your pages, and those relationships create structure.

The Random Surfer

The Random Surfer model gives us an even easier way of picturing this. Imagine somebody arriving on one page of your website. They choose a link at random and follow it. They arrive at another page, choose another link and continue.

Now imagine doing this not once, but thousands or millions of times. Some pages would be reached much more frequently than others.

Why?

Not necessarily because those pages contain better keywords or have a nicer design, but because of their position within the network of links. The structure itself changes the probability of reaching them. This gives us a very useful question to ask about a website: If we repeatedly move through the website by following its links, which pages does the structure naturally lead us towards? And perhaps more importantly: are they the same pages you actually want to rank?

Now We Have a Graph

There is another name for this network of pages and links: a graph. That is where graph theory comes in, and despite the mathematical name, the basic idea is straightforward. Imagine every page on your website as a dot. Now draw a line whenever one page links to another. You have created a map of your website.

Once we have that map, we can start asking some interesting questions:

  • Which pages sit at the centre of the website?
  • Which pages receive the most structural support?
  • Which pages connect important sections together?
  • Where does authority appear to be concentrating?
  • Are supporting articles reinforcing the right subjects?
  • Are important commercial pages sitting at the centre of the structure or somewhere around the edges?

These relationships can be difficult to see when you simply browse through a website. On screen, the website might look perfectly well organised, but mathematically it can tell a rather different story.

And Then We Have Markov Chains

Markov chains take the idea one stage further. Rather than simply looking at which pages connect to each other, we can look at the probability of moving from one part of the website to another.

Suppose we are currently on one page. Where can the structure take us next? And after that, where can we go? As these movements continue, patterns begin to appear. Some parts of the website may repeatedly lead back towards the same group of pages, while others receive very little attention from the structure. This allows us to model how movement through the website can settle into a pattern. Again, we don’t need to become mathematicians to understand why this is useful.

If the pages you most want to rank are important to the business, it makes sense to ask whether the structure of the website actually treats them as important.

What Does This Look Like on a Real Website?

This becomes much easier to understand when we look at real websites. When TGBarker analyses a website, we map the pages and the links between them so that we can look at the website as a whole rather than examining one page at a time. Sometimes what we find is quite surprising.

Pharmacy

A large UK pharmacy website was ranking on Page 2 of Google for the commercially valuable search phrase “Pharmacy UK”.

That raised an obvious question: if a website contains hundreds of pages, tens of thousands of internal links and significant authority, why would it still struggle to reach Page One?

By mapping the website and examining how authority was distributed through its internal structure, we could start to see what was happening beneath the individual pages.

Travel & Tourism

The travel website produced a particularly interesting result. When we mapped how authority flowed through the website, the biggest surprise was that the pages that should have been among the strongest — the pages actually selling holidays — were some of the weakest in the structure. You wouldn’t necessarily see that by browsing the website. It only became apparent when we looked at the network connecting the pages.

Used Cars

The used-car website is interesting for a different reason because it wasn’t obviously struggling. It already ranked on Page One for valuable searches including “used cars” and “used cars Southampton”. The website was fast, visually strong and technically sound. However, when we analysed the internal linking structure, we found a clear imbalance in how authority was distributed around the website. The strongest internal hubs were not the commercial pages.

This Is Why the Foundation Matters

The three websites are quite different, but they illustrate the same point.

A website can have good content, backlinks, fast speeds and even good rankings, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the underlying structure is concentrating its strength around the pages that matter most. This brings us back to the house.

You can have an excellent builder, electrician, plumber and interior designer, but they still need a plan showing how everything is supposed to fit together. The same applies to your website.

Your SEO agency may be doing an excellent job with keywords, content, backlinks, technical SEO, schema, site speed and everything else needed to compete in search. The question we are asking comes before all of that:

Does the underlying structure of the website support the pages you most want to rank?

Building the Website Foundation

So now we can start putting the pieces together. First, we need to know which pages are genuinely important to the objectives of the website. Then we need to understand which content supports those pages and how everything is connected.

Once those relationships are mapped, graph theory, PageRank-style analysis and Markov models can help us examine how authority and probability are distributed throughout the structure. What we end up with is something rather different from a normal list of SEO recommendations. We have a plan for how the website should fit together. This is the part of the process that TGBarker concentrates on. The plan can then be given to your SEO agency, website developer or internal marketing team to build upon. They can continue doing what they already do, but they now have a structural foundation around which that work can be built.

But How Do We Know Search Systems Are Following the Structure?

Once the structure has been created, another interesting question appears. Can we see what search systems actually do when they arrive? This is where server-side monitoring adds another dimension.

While traditional analytics are mainly concerned with human visitors, server logs allow us to examine requests made directly to the website, including requests from identifiable search crawlers and AI systems.

That means we can begin looking at how these systems actually move through the website:

  • Which pages are they visiting?
  • Which sections are they returning to?
  • Are the important pages being reached?
  • Is the supporting content being repeatedly crawled?
  • Are particular groups of pages receiving more search-system activity than others?
  • Does the behaviour we observe broadly follow the structure we deliberately created?

This doesn’t reveal Google’s secret ranking algorithm, nor does it guarantee a Page One ranking. But it does give us direct evidence of how identifiable search systems interact with the website. In other words, once the house has been built according to the plans, we have a way of seeing how search systems actually move around inside it.

That creates a practical feedback loop: build the foundation, put the structure in place, allow your normal SEO work to build upon it, and then observe what search systems actually do.

So How Do I Get My Website on Page One?

There isn’t a single answer.

Keywords matter. Content matters. Backlinks matter. Technical SEO matters. Competition matters. Many other signals will affect whether a particular page appears in the search results. But there is another question that should probably be asked much earlier:

Does the website itself have a structure that supports the pages you most want to rank?

That is what we mean by building the foundation.

Once you see a website this way, it stops being hundreds of separate pages and becomes one connected system that can be planned.
