Search engines do not rank a website by looking at a single page in isolation. They discover pages, follow links, interpret relationships between subjects and repeatedly evaluate how the different parts of a website fit together. A page may contain excellent information, but its position within the wider website structure can influence how easily search systems discover its purpose and its relationship to other important content.
Search Engines Need to Understand What Your Website Is About
Before a search engine can decide where a page belongs in search results, it first needs to interpret the subject of the page and how that subject relates to the rest of the website. Headings, body copy, internal links and the surrounding context all contribute to this understanding.
This is why it is useful to understand how search systems interpret your website rather than treating every page as an independent document. The relationship between pages can provide search systems with additional structural context about how subjects fit together.
Website Structure Helps Establish Importance
Not every page on a website has the same purpose or importance. Some pages explain supporting subjects, while others contain the central ideas, services or knowledge that the website most wants search systems to recognise.
Internal website structure provides routes between these pages. When supporting information consistently connects to important related pages, those relationships can help search systems discover the site’s hierarchy and topical organisation. This makes understanding structural authority flow through a website useful when examining how important pages are connected and reinforced by the wider website.
Internal Links Create Relationships Between Subjects
An internal link does more than provide another URL for a crawler to discover. The words surrounding the link and the anchor text itself provide context about why two pages are related.
For example, a paragraph discussing ranking probability can naturally lead to a more detailed explanation of the probability behind search rankings. The internal link then becomes part of the explanation rather than something added simply because an SEO checklist says another link is required.
Search Rankings Are Probabilistic
Search rankings should not be thought of as a simple checklist where completing a particular action guarantees a particular position. Search systems evaluate many signals and relationships when deciding which documents are likely to provide useful results for a query.
One way of exploring these relationships is to examine SEO as a Markov chain and the mathematics of ranking. Instead of considering pages independently, the website can be represented as a network in which movement between pages can be examined as probabilities.
Search Engines Can Follow the Website Network
Once you start looking at a website as a network, individual pages become nodes and internal links become connections between those nodes. The structure begins to show how information is organised and which routes connect supporting subjects with more important areas of the website.
That changes the question from simply asking, “How well optimised is this page?” to asking, “Where does this page sit within the website’s knowledge structure, and where does it lead?”
This is one reason examining how Google evaluates a website as a connected structure can provide a different perspective from analysing individual pages entirely in isolation.
Strong Supporting Content Should Lead Somewhere
Supporting articles can attract crawlers because they answer specific questions or explore individual subjects in greater depth. But attracting search-system attention is only part of their structural purpose.
If search systems repeatedly visit Supporting Content but predominantly move from one Supporting page to another, relatively little of that observed movement may reach the website’s central Authority Core. The objective is therefore not simply to create more internal links. It is to provide relevant pathways from supporting subjects towards the pages that develop those subjects more fully.
This can also help explain why SEO progress can plateau when important pages exist but the surrounding website structure does not provide sufficiently clear pathways towards them.
Anchor Text Should Explain the Destination
Anchor text becomes particularly useful when it forms part of the meaning of a sentence. A generic phrase such as “read more here” tells the reader very little about the destination. Descriptive anchor text can instead explain why the destination is relevant to the subject currently being discussed.
The objective is not to force ranking keywords into links. It is to make the relationship between the source paragraph and destination page understandable. The subject of the paragraph provides the semantic context, while the internal link creates the structural connection.

This creates a simple way of thinking about contextual internal linking:
Subject → Explanation → Contextual Anchor → Related Authority Page
The semantic part is the meaning expressed by the paragraph and its surrounding content. The structural part is the internal link connecting that subject to another relevant page within the website.
Put the two together and an internal link becomes more than navigation. It creates an explicit connection between what is being discussed and where a search system can discover more detailed information about that subject.
Can We Measure What Happens Next?
The contextual internal links within this page have been deliberately placed inside paragraphs discussing subjects directly related to their destination pages. This provides an opportunity to observe what happens after the page is published and subsequently discovered by search systems.
Server-side behavioural analysis can then be used to examine whether search systems visit this page, which internal destinations are subsequently observed, whether movement progresses from Supporting Content into the Authority Core, and which Authority Core destinations receive the strongest observed movement.
Over time, repeated observations may provide evidence of whether search-system movement from this deliberately structured Supporting Content page progresses towards Authority Core destinations connected through contextual internal links.
What This Experiment Does Not Prove
Observed movement cannot prove that a search engine followed an internal link specifically because of the semantic meaning of its anchor text. Nor can server-side observations reveal exactly how a search algorithm internally interpreted a paragraph, link or destination.
What can be measured is the subsequent behaviour: whether search systems repeatedly discover the page and whether observed movement progresses towards the Authority Core pages to which the article has been deliberately connected.
This creates a testable distinction between what the website was designed to encourage and what search systems were subsequently observed doing.
